Today saw the school's Junior Soccer team mirror the success of their senior counterparts by reaching the Munster Cup final following a comprehensive 4-0 away win against St. Peter's Passage West School in Douglas Hall.
The girls started well with high intensity and a real sharpness on the ball. Rachel O'Sullivan displayed some quick thinking to deftly glide a pass though to Barbara Garcia who went close to scoring within the first 5 minutes.
Once Passage settled the game became a much tighter affair. Captain Rachel Stuart and her dynamic central midfield partner Isobel Barry were forced to put in some tough challenges to ensure that Midleton remained in control of the game. Centre backs Grace Nolan and Ally Stuart provided a solid foundation in defence which enabled the girls to press forward in search of that opening goal which eventually came from Dani Stuart on the 20th minute mark following some dazzling footwork on the left wing.
Just before the end of the first half the girls got their second. Left back Aisling Curtain playing a sublime through ball to Dani Stuart , who now full of confidence, slotted home with clinical precision.
Midleton replicated their stellar form in the second half. Trudi Kearney , Ava Dwyer and Kayla Jennings entered the fray to provide fresh legs for the team which saw the girls maintain the intensity that Passage were finding very difficult to cope with. On the 50 minute mark right back Naoise Hogan and winger Reidin Deavy combined superbly to put Rachel O Sullivan through to score a sublime third with a finish which highlighted her class. Goalkeeper Kerri Fitzgerald also ensured the college retained a clean sheet with an excellent save on the hour mark, before Dani Stuart finally put the game beyond doubt with her hat trick goal.
A fantastic display from all the girls who can now look forward to the Munster Junior Cup Final on February 31st. Exciting times for soccer in the college!!
Thanks to coaches Mr. Browne, Mr. Whyte and Mr. O'Neill for their work with the girls during the year.
