Recent Activities & Achievements at Midleton College, March 2013

One of the great strengths of Midleton College is the range of activities within and beyond the classroom provided for our students by members of staff and taken up with such enthusiasm by so many of our students. This rich diversity adds layers to the personal development of our students which is simply not replicated in many other schools.

All members of 4th Form have participated in two Work Experience placements, the programme for which is coordinated by Mr Leopold, and in the week-long Outdooor Pursuits trip to Heir island.  Each group was accompanied by two members of staff.

A group of eleven 5th and 4th Form students, who are members of Midleton Young Rotary Club, travelled to Newport, Rhode Island, USA, to participate in the St Patrick’s Day celebrations and to visit schools and the State legislature.  The group was coordinated by Ms Twomey and Mr Nugent.

Six 4th Form students have returned from a week-long visit to Kolkata, India, as Ambassadors with the HOPE Foundation.  The group was coordinated by Mr Preston and Ms Doyle.

40 students travelled to the Wesley College Inter-Schools Music Festival accompanied by Ms Dennehy, Mr Sexton and Ms Kristin Hollowell.

The 1st Form and 4th Form Parent/Teacher Consultation meetings took place.  Thanks are expressed to all the parents and guardians who were able to make time to attend these important meetings.

The 2nd Form girls’ hockey team has reached the final of their Cup competition having defeated Sacred Heart, Clonakilty, in the semi-final.  The final of this competition will take place after Easter.

The U14, U16A and U16B girls’ teams as well as the U14A, U14B and the U16B boys’ hockey teams have all concluded their Cup competitions.  The U16 boys played in the Cup semi-final on 13th March.  The senior 2nds Boys hockey team was defeated in the Cup Final 2-0 by Villiers School.

The Easter Music Festival took place on 20th March at 7pm in Cloyne Cathedral.  Sincere thanks to Mr Sexton, Mr & Mrs Nicholls, Ms Dennehy and Ms Mackillop for their coordination of the choir and ensemble.

The JCT defeated Bandon by 22-8 to win the Munster Schools Shield competition.  Congratulations are due to Eoghan Daly (Captain), Mr Stanley (Coach) and all members of the squad.

All 5th and 6th Form Higher English students travelled to a performance of ‘Translations’ at Cork Opera House.  This excursion was coordinated by members of the English department.

Mock Orals have been held for all Leaving Certificate students of Spanish.  Junior Certificate Irish Oral exams have been held.  This is the first time this facility has been available at Junior Certificate level.  The Oral exam counts for 40% of the final grade.
