Ashton 0-3 Midleton College - Senior A League
The Senior Girls Hockey side got their first win in emphatic style today, beating Ashton 3-0 away from home. The girls started and finished the game on top and the result duly reflects how the game went.
Barely 5 minutes had elapsed when good work by Elena O’Galligan won a short corner and Shirley Bailey drilled the ball into the bottom corner, at 90mph as only she can! 1-0 to Midleton.
The girls continued to press and were unlucky not to make it 2-0 when Emma Musgrave missed a good chance, under pressure from an Ashton defender, just putting her off as she struck the ball.
Ashton only threatened on the break, but the stalwart defence of Laura Casey, Gaby Olden, Shirley Bailey, Ruth Deane and Amanda Tyrell, as well as goalkeeper Alannah Drennan kept them at bay, limiting them to half chances only. 1-0 at the break.
The second half continued in the same vein, with Emily O’Hara and Zara Bowles controlling the centre of midfield, ably supported by Charlotte Walsh and Lucy Quirk either side. The work rate of the midfield was superb and it was their clever link up play which led to Emily O’Hara sweeping home 10 minutes into the second half for 2-0.
Ashton rarely threatened in the second half and any time they did venture into our D, Alannah Drennan cleared with ease. With the forwards making excellent runs up front, the midfielders were able to find them easily. Tireless running from Elena O’Galligan, Hanna Roch Perks, Emma Musgrave and Maedhbh McCarthy was causing the Ashton defence a lot of problems and this led to space being created for Zara Bowles to slot home our 3rd 10 minutes from time.
The girls saw the game out to the end with minimal fuss and it finished 3-0. Well done to the entire squad, including the travelling, non playing players/supporters on the day.
