Future Olympians

The delayed 2021 Junior & Intermediate South Munster Track and Field Championship took place in MTU (CIT) on Friday with 11 Midleton College students taking part. There were several eye catching performances throughout the evening, foremost amongst them was Noah Switzer who claimed gold in the junior boys long jump posting an impressive 5.20m. Noah quickly dusted himself down to secure a track and field double winning gold in the Junior Boys 200m in dominant fashion.

There were medal winning performances too from Uzo Nwaeze who secured silver in the Intermediate Boys Shot Put (5kg). 9.31m was the best of a consistent series of throws from Uzo who despite finishing behind his compatriot from Boherbue, was well clear of the rest of the field.

Jude Buckley claimed silver in the Junior Boys 100m in a time of 12.90. A fantastic run from Jude who showed no signs of fatigue despite having finished 5th in the 1500m, in a highly impressive 4.43, earlier in the evening. Also competing in the Junior Boys distance events was Sean Connolly, posting 5.22 in the 1500m. Sean’s most impressive performance however came in the 800m where he finished 4th in a time of 2.45 amongst a high-quality field of athletes.

Both Kyle Kamdem (12.48) and David Ike (13.31 ) progressed from their semi finals in the Intermediate Boys 100m. Replicating those times proved difficult in the final given the quick turn around between races, but both performed admirably finishing 5th and 7th respectively.

Phoebe Sexton competed in the Junior Girls long jump and improved her distance with each of her five jumps, finishing 5th with a best of 3.75. There were also several admirable displays from the Midleton College girls in the sprint events with Phoebe, Valerie Alapini, Elizabeth Dikibo, Hannah Curtin and Yoke He each putting in fine performances on the track.  

Having had a taste of competitive action our athletes now look forward to the upcoming Cross-Country calendar with running club training continuing every Wednesday at 2pm.  All newcomers welcome!
