Young Scientist

2010 Young Scientist

From 1588 entries for the BT Young Scientist Technology Exhibition Hannah Hayes was one of the 520 projects to have qualified to compete in the RDS, Dublin in January. The title of her project is 'The Tumble Charger'' and was entered in the chemical, physical and mathematical sciences section.

Hannah's project uses a Hamster Ball sphere within which she has created a geared rotational device into which can be placed standard batteries. When the sphere is placed in a tumble dryer, the rotating action causes the batteries to re-charge. Simple, but brilliant!

Hannah emerged as one of the main prizewinners in her category. Hannah was awarded 2nd place overall in the chemical, physical & mathematical sciences section. Hannah was also one of only 20 finalists who were awarded a BT Business mentoring Scholarship. For the next 12 months BT will provide business mentoring support to advise Hannah in the development of her Tumble Charger to potential product design stage.

2009 Young Scientist

Jack Cowhig (Form 1) entered the Young Scientist Exhibition and was delighted to be accepted. His project was about social networking sites eg twitter, bebo etc. He also built a working model to demontrate how these websites work.

2008 Young Scientist

It was our ambition to get into the Young Scientist Competition, and the day we arrived we were amazed by all the projects that were there. When the judges came around we were very nervous and they just asked about our project. At the prize giving we thought it wouldn’t get anything, but then they called out Jack and I to come up to receive The European Recycling Award for our project, “Fantastic Plastic”. We also won third place in our category. This was a great result and both of us were very happy!
- Billy McCarthy and partner, Jack Gibbons, (Form II)

Major Success at this years competition.

The project from our two first year pupils (Billy McCarthy and Jack Gibbons) gained two prizes at this years BT Young Scientist Competition at the RDS in Dublin. The title of the project was "Fantastic Plastic-But does it have a future?". With most of the 1st year students traveling up to lend their support and see all the other exhibits the two project workers saw a lot of hard work rewarded with 3rd place in their section (Junior Social and Behavioral Sciences) and a special prize from the European Recycling Platform that was open to all age groups and so was a very large category. They won €150 each and a large Waterford Crystal Trophy. Well done to students and parents. A special thanks to Ms Curtin Mr. O'Neill and Ms Hassey for their assistance.
