Midleton College PTA Report

Thursday 11 January 2007

The Committee this year was made up of:

Louise Oppermann, Rosemary Stronach, Gillian Nicholson, Andre Tibshraeny, Amanda Coyne, Jamie Monaghan, Jacqui McLay, Simon Thompson, Allie Mackillop, Robin Smith, Michael Daley and Lucy O Regan.

We met 6 times during the school year and had a busy and varied programme.

Code Of Behaviour

Following a Staff Review of the Code of Behaviour after Mid-Term, Leave Out for 6th Year Boarders was extended to twice a week for 45 minutes with the rest of the boarders allowed down town once a week for 30 minutes.

Compass

We are affiliated to The National Association of Compass which stands for Co-Operation of Minority Religions and Protestant Parent Associations - Post Primary. They run information Seminars for parents of affiliated schools. This year's Munster based talk was held in Midleton College by Jerry Lynch which addressed the challenges of parenting Young People aged 12-18 years.

Drugs Awareness Evening

This was organised by the PTA for parents of all pupils in the school. An Information Presentation was given by Midleton based Gardai specialising in the area of Drugs and Alcohol Abuse in Young People. A very open and informative discussion followed which was facilitated by Sally O Reilly and John Russell who work with our Transition Year students.

Careers Fair

Following a survey of 5/6th years on their top Career Choices we organised on January 26th a Careers Seminar where the students were in small groups and had an opportunity to meet with and discuss the careers of the following:

  • Vet
  • Beautician
  • Car Mechanic
  • Electronic Engineer
  • Sports Science Student

Many thanks to them for spending the afternoon with us listening and answering questions.

Uniform Sale

We ran a very successful Second Hand Uniform Sale on Sports Day. Thankfully the day was dry and it was a sell-out! This will be held again after Sports Day 2007, so Sixth Years and Overseas Students, have your blazers and coats ready!

Mulled Wine and Mince Pies Reception

This was held after the Christmas Carol Service on 14th December and was very well attended. Biscuits, drinks and sausage rolls were also provided for the Boarders who were not attending with parents.
