The traditional end to the school year is the school sports day. Less of an athletic event more a fun-in-the-sun thing. Parents and pupils compete in a series of almost Olympic Disciplines such as throwing the cricket ball and the sac race. Thrills and spills are promised on the school cricket grounds.
The pitch and put tournament has been running for several weeks on a course set out on the College grounds. Under the careful supervision of Mr. O'Mahony pupils have been coming to the staff room to collect their cards and returning to regale us with tails of short irons and monster puts. There was a senior and junior pool that helped maximise participation. One of the best matches was the junior semi-final between Ned O'Shea and David Poynton. Ned lost despite getting 4 birdies in 9 holes. David won with an incredible 7 birdies. It culminated in a four player final drawn from the best of the two pools played on Wednesday 28th May. David Poynton won the overall championship defeating Greg Harrigan, Sean Harrigan and Greg Chambers. He went round in level par quite an achievement on our course.
This year as usual we kicked off the day itself with the single wicket where individual players compete with each other in an all round bowling and batting competition. The winner of the senior boys was Sean Harrigan and of the intermediate boys was the cunning batting of John McAvoy
Next is the throwing the cricket ball as pictured. One for the pupils with the whippet like arms. Not the one for the old and slow to be judging. The ball goes many a mile. This year our winners were:-
