Dairy Farm Visit
Tuesday 29 January 2008
The 5th form Ag. Science group of Mr. Stanley were recently welcomed onto the modern dairy farm of Mr. Crimmins in Castlelyons. He showed them his 360 milkers and how he uses a rotary milking machine to milk 60 of his cows at a time milking them all in an hour. Most of the herd are Holstein-Friesian but he also has a dry herd for beef production. We also were shown the tagging system that allows us to track the origin of our food and the hygiene precautions taken on the modern farm.
Mechanisation went as far as a metal scrapper that collected the slurry and deposited it into a 4m pit. The farm had a 30000litre bulk tank but even that is filled in 3 days. Leaving aside some of the smells it was a very educational trip. Thanks to Mr. Stanley and Mr. Crimmins as well as his farm manager Mr. Deane.
Meg O Hanlon and Jack Lynch.
