Wednesday 05 September 2007

The 51 Midleton College students who sat the Leaving Certificate in 2007 achieved overall grades which were twice the national average.  The College is extremely proud of their achievements, which maintain the long-standing tradition of supporting each pupil to achieve to the maximum of their potential.

The average CAO Points score per pupil was 413!

From a total of 384 papers submitted, 379 papers were successfully passed, an overall Pass rate of 99%.

An indication of the overall level of achievement is shown in the tables below:

Within these general figures it is also encouraging to note 84% of all science-based papers taken at Higher Level attaining an Honours grade A, B or C, reflecting once again the importance of science subjects within the College curriculum.

In Geography a remarkable 42 out of 45 candidates attained an Higher Level grade A or B.

This year also clearly saw a strong performance in Modern Languages, both in terms of the % of pupils taking Higher Level and the % attaining Honours grades in French and Spanish.

Roisin Stronach led the year with 585 CAO Points, with Caroline Murphy, Alan O’Regan, Polo Crosbie, Sinead Lucey, Charlotte Spink, Emma Cotter, David Quill and Owen Daly all scoring 500 CAO Points or over. However, congratulations are extended to all members of the year on their success in these examinations.

The success of the 6th Form has been re-enforced by the CAO offers. The vast majority of 6th Form have been offered their 1st or 2nd Choice with, at this point in time, a record number of 7 taking up study at Trinity College Dublin.

Students have also accepted 1st Round offer places at UCC, CIT, UCD, DCU, UL, WIT, The Crawford Gallery of Art, University of Sunderland and University of Brighton.

These achievements emphasise once again the quality of educational relationships that exist between pupils, parents and teachers at the College. They also serve to re-enforce the value of the holistic approach to education that pupils in the College are offered. Midleton College has a proud record of supporting and encouraging all pupils to achieve their full potential, whatever that may be, through the recognition of the importance of a regular pattern of study and testing allied to fostering a high level of self-worth and personal confidence.

Our pupils’ results also demonstrate that is possible, indeed even beneficial, for pupils to participate in a structured, well-planned programme of extra-curricular activities while also achieving the very highest grades that one is capable of in the Leaving Certificate. 6th Form students also played leading roles during their Leaving Certificate year as members of the Mungret Cup winning rugby team, the All-Ireland Schools Hockey Championships boys hockey team, Division 1 girls senior hockey team, members of the College orchestra and drama group.
