With the start of the summer term came the start of this year’s athletics season.  Training started on Thursdays. The first competition was on Saturday 12th May with the South Munster Schools’  Championship. Competitors entered into all events in track and field, at all age levels, from Under-13 (Junior) to Senior.
We had a number of victories and a lot of success on the day, with the boys Junior boys’ relay team (David Stead, Nathaniel Ottman, Adam Colton and Shane Murphy) and Dunnacha O’Riordan in shot putt winning their events, and advancing on to the Munster Championships in Limerick the next weekend.
At CIT on 15th May Local Schools in Munster locked horns in this annual summer festival of athletics.  Midleton competed in almost all events including high and long jump, shot, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m 1500m and 4x100m relay.  In the senior boys shot Donnacha O'Riordan finished 1st.  Caroline Murphy won the senior girls High Jump.  Our greatest triumph was in the junior boys and intermediate boys relay.  Teams of Nathaniel Ottman, Shane Murphy, David Stead and Adam Colton won the Junior and Nick Burns, Shrew Power, Mathew Wilson and Charlie O'Sullivan won the Intermediate.   This helped the boys to an overall 2nd place just 9 points behind the winners.  The girls finished a very creditable 5th.  All the efforts of the students and Staff were appreciated but special mention must go to Kimber Parmer and Liz Clifford for taking the team to the competition.
