Killarney

After setting off on a bright Friday morning, we began our journey to the beautiful Killarney Mountains to carry out our field study of the Gaddagh Valley.

We stopped briefly in Macroon for coffee before continuing on our way and after seeing the Gap of Dunloe far to the south of us, finally reaching a little bridge over the Gaddagh river where we sat and ate our lunch before beginning our trek.

The weekend was beautiful but made for a bit of an uphill struggle as the heat was too much for some of us to handle, though Mrs Levis said she would rather the heat then the wind and rain she and other groups have had to endure in previous years.

As we made our way steadily uphill, stopping every so often to fill in our questionaire, which was infact a welcomed rest, the breath taking features of the Gaddagh Valley began to unfold. The gleaming pyramidal peak of Carrauntoohil, the astonishing incised vally, the unmistable Hags teeth and the glistening waters of both Lough Callee and Lough Gouragh. Our studies included measuring the temperture and pH of the water at various points along the river as well as explaning various features of the landscape at each stop.

It wasn't long before we had to begin our descent, having been climbing for over two hours, we were all anxious to get back for some food, so the walk down didn't take quite as long.

Once everyone had made it back to the bus we headed straight to Killarney for a delicious evening meal in the Failte Hotel
