Hannah Hayes, a student at Midleton College, has devised a unique method to recharge domestic batteries using a rotating ball placed inside a tumble dryer which works by harnessing the kinetic energy of a household appliance.
Hannah recently travelled to the 2010 Shanghai International New Science and Technology Expo with fellow student Beth Wardle where she was awarded one of 13 major prizes presented for “best thesis”.
Both Hannah and Beth worked jointly on a second prize-winning project, “Kiwi 3”, which investigated the ability of different filter media to extract DNA from fruit. They won a “best display” prize for their stand.
Congratulations to both Hannah and Beth!
