Hannah Hayes triumphs in BT Young Scientist Final

Wednesday 20 January 2010
Hannah Hayes' project 'Tumble Charger', which uses kinetic energy to -re-charge batteries has been selected as one of only 20 of the 520 finalists at this year's BT Young Scientist Competition to receive a BT Business Mentor Award. This follows Hannah having earlier been awarded 2nd place in the Intermediate section of the competition. Hannah will now receive 12 months external expert support in developing her project with the possibility of it moving to production stage.

Hannah has developed a prototype model using a 'hamster ball' within which she has built a gearing system operating around a pendulum into which spent batteries can be placed. When the 'ball' is rotated, as in a tumble dryer, the batteries are re-charged. Simple but brilliant! A Eureka moment which has been researched and turned into a usable product.

Congratulations to Hannah, Ms Curtin, (Young Scientist Co-ordinator) and Hannah's support team of her mum & dad, Ally & Ian Hayes.
