Senior Girls Hockey
The senior squad played a total of 14 matches, recording 3 losses and 11 wins. The season started with two friendlies against Kilkenny College and Mount Mercy Convent A. We lost 1-2 and 0-3 respectively. We started out our league campaign in November against St Angela’s College with a 3-0 win with goals from Michelle Callan, Shirley Baker and Edel Coyne. Our next outing was against Bandon Grammar in the league resulting in a 4-0 win, with Shirley Baker scoring all 4 from centre forward. Our next league game was against Scoil Mhuire resulting in a 3-0 win with goals from Michelle Callan, Jen Preston and Emily Simonin. With two league matches remaining we faced Sacred Heart Clonakilty away which proved to be a tough game but we came away with a 1-0 win due to a short corner strike by Julie Coyne which was saved but with Julie getting on the end of the rebound to score.
After Christmas we had the Senior A Cup which was against Ashton away, after playing some excellent hockey we went forward to the next round with a 3-0 win with goals from Shirley Baker and two from Michelle Callan.
Back to the league, we needed a win against Regina Mundi to win the South Munster League, which we did with a 5-0 result, with a hat-trick from Julie Coyne, Michelle Callan and Shirley Baker getting a goal apiece. Next match was Senior A Cup against Bandon Grammar, who were Munster League champions and which was a daunting fixture. After a hard fought game Bandon came out the better side with a 1-0 win and they then went on to win the Senior A Cup. St Angela’s College Cork were our next opposition in a friendly in preparation for the Munster Senior B League final, resulting in a 5-1 win with goals from Shirley Baker 1 and two each from Clare Stead and Michelle Callan. The Munster League final against UCT was the best game we played all season after a nervous start nearly conceding a goal we settled after and looked like coming out as winners which we did winning 3-0 with goals from Shirley Baker, Michelle Callan and Julie Coyne.
With such a successful season we wish to play Senior A League and Cup next season. I would like to thank Lillian Hurley who captained the side with Clare Stead as vice-captain, Jessica Griffin who represented Munster at U16 level and Julie Coyne at U 18’s. I would also like to express my thanks to Ivan Leopold and Laura Guest for travelling to Manchester on the Easter Hockey Tour which resulted in a good tour (see tour notes compiled by Emily Simonin).
Also thank you to Ms Hassey, Ms Clifford and Ms Power for umpiring during the season and to Rebecca Murphy who coached in Midleton College until Christmas.

Senior 2nds Hockey
The Senior seconds played in the Munster Inter B2 league this season. With two wins, one draw and five losses there was plenty of mixed fortune on the playing pitch. However, fielding twenty-one different players and competing against eight different teams the senior seconds had a successful year. There was a great spirit in the team throughout the year regardless of result. Captain, Rosie Hockenhull and her fellow sixth years Erne Connolly, Kate Murray and Shirley Baker ably ensured this. Top scorer for the year was Shirley who memorably hit four in a comfortable 5-0 league victory over Bandon Grammar. I would like to thank the four sixth years for their dedication throughout a very challenging final academic year in Midleton College. I would also like to congratulate Brona Kelly, Rachael Smith and Rosie the only players from the panel who started in all eight of the games.

U16 B1 hockey
Played- 10 Won- 4 Drew- 3 Lost- 3
The U16 B1 had a very early start to the season, kicking off mid-season with a trip to Mt. Mercy. Such an early match always has its benefits and disadvantages- its tough to go straight into a match after only a few training sessions but good to get a few friendly matches before the league starts to look at various positional options for the season ahead. Unfortunately we faced a strong Mt Mercy side, losing 4-0, but it gave us a good idea of the standard we were playing and made us realise we needed to step up a gear for the coming season.
Next up were St Aloysius, on the grit, a surface we're not really used to any more. We went into this game without 4 of our usual starting players, and were unlucky to come out on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline, but again played well at times, showing we were gelling as a team and going to be capable of some positive results through the season.
The league competition started in early November. We played St Angela's in a very competitive match, but on this occasion we were unable to score and it ended in a 0-0 draw. Scoil Mhuire were our next opponents in the league. Again, we were without a couple of key players, in Ruth O'Callaghan and Elsbeth Wolfe, which resulted in various positional changes. We played well but once again found it difficult to score and the end result was a 0-0 result.
Loreto Fermoy were next up. This was the match where we really came together as a team and started to reach our potential. Fi Power scored the only goal in a very positive, attacking game. It was good to finally get the win that we deserved and gave us encouragement heading into the start of the cup campaign against Scoil Mhuire. This was a great team performance and Sophie Smyth scored twice, giving us a 2-0 win. Mt Mercy were our next opponents in the cup. There were a certain amount of nerves, after the 4-0 loss at the start of the season, but we really stepped up to the mark here, proving ourselves, scoring five without reply, with two goals each from Tiger Waite and Sally-Ann Quill and one from Katie Matthews. Again, this result gave us the confidence we needed after a few tough matches.
The final league game was against Sacred Heart, Clonakilty. This was possibly our toughest challenge in the league. We went a goal down early on, but fought back and scored through Lydia Daly, but just couldn't find a second goal. All-in-all it was a good league campaign, but unfortunately so many draws denied us a place in the play-offs.
A cup semi-final against Rockwell College was our next game. A very tight match followed, with both teams failing to score in normal time. In extra time we won a short corner and Sally-Ann Quill stepped up and put it in the back of the net with an excellent strike to put us into the U16B Cup Final.
We faced a long bus journey to Ursuline's, Thurles for the final. The match started well for us, with Robyn Lynch putting us one up, but unfortunately late on Ursuline's equalised to send the game into extra time. Ursuline's were the team to get the breakthrough in extra time and we were subjected to a heartbreaking extra time defeat. The team was ably captained by Ruth O'Callaghan, who turned into a very strong, solid defender, having played in attack in previous years. Other players who developed and played well through the season were Sophie Smyth, Fi Power and Tiger Waite. This group of girls were a great group to coach, always positive and enthusiastic (and their occasional blond moments always kept me entertained!!). I wish them every success and enjoyment for their future hockey careers.

U16 B2
The U16 B2 team this year were a great group to coach, always enthusiastic and very keen to play matches. They played a total of 9 matches and even though the stats don't sound too favourable (2 wins, a draw and 6 losses) this didn't curb their enthusiasm for the sport. Captain for the year was April Hackett, who led from the front, finishing the season as top goal scorer with three goals. The season started with a 2-1 win against Ashton, but then there were 6 defeats in a row, but the girls managed to end on a high with a resounding 3-0 victory over Colaiste Mhuire, Cobh and a 1-1 draw with Christ the King. Players who performed particularly well during the season were April, Lydia Daly, Tiger Waite Amy Kingston and Rachel Quinn. Well done to all who played their part in making it a thoroughly enjoyable season and may they continue to enjoy playing hockey as they go through the school.
