Asgard Scholarship

The Asgard

The Asgard is a sailing ship and sailing vessel. The Midleton College association sponsors two places for students every year. It is always an enjoyable and sometimes hard experience. We imagine that the two are very excited about their week away.

2007

Tuesday the 16th of October saw two pupils, Tom Dwyer and Tiernan Brennan, of Midleton College stowing their schoolbooks and embarking on a much more physical and engrossing opportunity, sailing on the legendary training vessel the “Asgard”. Following there initiation to the weathered crew, they trained in safety procedures and rope tying skills. A short sleep which was interrupted with repetitive calls for night watch, the boys were allowed to indulge in fishing for their evening meal while they sailed to Kinsale.

The following day they set sail in the direction for the Beare Islands and took heed in learning how to properly raise the sails. After a dreary night of four hour shifts each, the two lads were given an easy day by strolling around Schull. The ship left for Baltimore then around again to Kinsale where they spent the night. For the last days of their experience, the ship headed into Cork harbour and anchored for their last rest aboard.

Finally, the boys made a job of cleaning their areas for the next bunch of youngsters.

Asked how they found the voyage, both said “It was a good experience and we would go back anytime. We really enjoyed ourselves and we are so glad we got to go”.

2006

Congratulations to Laura Van Coppenhagen and Johnathan Hackett in being this years two students to be selected to go on the Asgard.

2005

Shane O’ Brien and Caroline Levis were chosen to sail on the Asgard sailing ship. Both Shane and Caroline were given a once in a life time opportunity to go on this trip. They received first hand experience of what it is like to voyage on a sailing ship.

Throughout the seven day voyage which lasted from the 7th to the 14th of October they were treated like crew members. This included learning of all of the safety features of the boat, knowning about the different ropes used for sailing and swabbing the decks.

'We both had a brilliant time on board and we recommend to anyone who wanted to go on this trip in the future.'
